ATP’s Latinos in Tennis, bid farewell to Gustavo Kuerten at a star studded celebration in Miami Friday evening.
On the rooftop terrace of the Epic Apartments and Hotel, overlooking Biscayne Bay, lights from the city dancing on the water, Samba music and the scent of Brazilian Barbeque fill the air while the beautiful and famous , athletes, celebrities, VIP’s and tennis professionals from around the world gather to honor Guga’s accomplishments in the world of Tennis.
"The Miami tournament has been a very special stop on the ATP tour in my career," said Guga. "I have always loved playing here and having this party is a tremendous honor. This is a very special evening with all the people who came out to support me and who put the effort into making it happen, the ATP organizing it for me; it is everything you work for all your career. It's always been important for me to feel I could make an impact on people's lives, not only on the court, through my passion and my love for tennis, but also off the court. I have been very fortunate to be able to do what I love for a living and have received so much more than I could ever have imagined in my wildest dreams. All I can say is thank you. I really enjoyed every single minute of my professional career, even when it was tough, practicing, rehab and physiotherapy. I hope we will continue to see players showing their passion and giving their hearts out on the court. I will surely continue to be involved in tennis, helping develop it in Brazil as well as continuing my work with my foundation."
Guga was presented with a plaque of appreciation from the ATP by his good friend and fellow player, Nicolas LaPente. La Pente commented that Guga has always remained the same person throughout his career, always a friend, and a special person.
I remember the first time I saw Guga play at Roland Garros. A tall lanky player, with a head full of curls and a smile that could light up the world. I thought at the time, I hope this guy does well; he is just the kind of person the game of tennis, needs. He’s just the kind of person the world needs. Someone who can make you smile someone who you want to win, someone who makes everything seem better.
We will sorely miss you Guga, thank you for a wonderful 11 years of tennis, laughter, joy and Samba.
