Mary-Joe Fernandez, former member of the 1996 winning Fed Cup squad, now second-year captain of the US team, lead her players to victory in the quarterfinal Fed Cup away match against France on Feb. 6-7. Melanie Oudin sealed the deal, giving the U.S. an insurmountable 3-0 lead after she shook off a slow start to sneak by France’s Julie Coin, 7-6, 6-4.
The U.S. will next host Russia in the semifinals, April 24-25, at a site to be determined. The Russians beat Serbia, 3-2, in the quarters.
Oudin lost an early break to the 76th-ranked Coin, but the American, who gained a reputation as a fighter after her quarterfinal showing at last year’s US Open, came storming back to force a tie-breaker, which she won 7-3. In the second set, Oudin, ranked No. 53, exchanged breaks with Coin, then went ahead in the fifth game of the set and held for the win.

Doubles veterans Cara Black of Zimbabwe and Leander Paes of India took home the mixed-doubles title at the Australian Open, beating the Russian/Czech team of Ekaterina Makarova and Jaroslav Levinsky, 7-5, 6-3.
The Grand Slam experience of Black and Paes clearly showed in the final. Paes now holds 11 Grand Slam doubles titles in men’s and mixed, while Black counts 9 Grand Slam doubles wins. In addition, the Black-Paes pairing won the 2008 US Open Mixed Doubles Championships. In 2009, the team was the runner-up at Wimbledon and US Open.
On the other hand, the 2010 Aussie Open marked the first time that Makarova and Levinsky reached a final.
Black also stretched out her run in women’s doubles at this year’s Aussie Open, teaming with Liezel Huber to reach the final, where they lost to Serena and Venus Williams.
