PLAYERS WILTING IN THE HEAT
Tuesday, 31 August 2010 19:54
_SAM0347Tuesday was a scorcher at Flushing Meadows. The second day of the 2010 US Open saw temperatures rise to over 100 degrees today and the affect on play was evident.

Third-seed Novak Djokovic had a bit of a scare from fellow Serbian Viktor Troicki. Two players that know each other very well played a stellar match that went the distance with Djokovic moving into the second round, 6-3, 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. In the fourth set it seemed that the heat was going to do in the favorite, but Troicki let him off the hook.

Veteran Clement Upends Baghdatis in Five-Setter
Tuesday, 31 August 2010 19:48
_SAM9883The back and forth between 16th seed Marcos Baghdatis and Arnaud Clement could hardly have been more nerve-wracking, especially in the heat of the day at the US Open. But in the end, the veteran Clement came back from two sets to one down to win 6-3, 2-6, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 and move into the second round.

“My confidence was very, very low before this match,” Clement said afterward, referring to his lackluster summer hard court tournaments. “I didn’t expect anything from this match. Now, I played my best match, that’s for sure, for all the summer. I beat Baghdatis in a Grand Slam. It’s [a] very good result.”

Del Potro Knocks out Federer to Become New US Open Champ

By Todd Pechter

uso-9-14-01In a hard-fought five-set contest, sixth-seed Juan Martin del Potro of Argentina defeated five-time defending champion Roger Federer, 3-6, 7-6 (5), 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2, to win this year’s US Open. It was a back and forth affair, with the powerful strokes of del Potro finally seeming to wear down the top-ranked Federer.

While from the outset Federer did not appear to have brought his “A” game today, through the first part of the match it still seemed he would be good enough  to claim his sixth straight title here and add to his record total of Grand Slam victories. As it turned out, Federer’s total remains at 15, while del Potro gets his first notch on the Grand Slam tote board, with promise of more to come.

Clijsters Writes the Final(s) Chapter

uso-9-13-09

There were several compelling stories on the women’s side at this year’s US Open. The one that occupied most of the crowds that came out to see the matches, and took up most of the American newsprint (and web pages) was that of Melanie Oudin. The 17 year old from Georgia came out of nowhere to advance to the quarter-finals here, and people couldn’t get enough of her. She became the darling of the women’s draw, and not far behind her was Yanina Wickmayer, a Belgian girl who also was unheard of by most before this year’s tournament. She made it all the way to the semi-finals, but didn’t get much recognition here in the States because of Oudin’s run. She didn’t even get the exclusive press back in her own country, as she had to share the headlines with countrywoman Kim Clijsters.
